Heldt lab

Welcome to the Heldt Bioseparations Laboratory at Michigan Tech!

The Heldt Bioseparations Lab at Michigan Tech is interested in exploiting surface chemistry to (i) remove and/or purify pathogens and toxins from water and food, (ii) detect pathogens and toxins quickly and easily with point-of-care devices, and (iii) discovering natural antiviral compounds while (iv) educating students in chemical and biological engineering.  We currently work with several viruses to give us a range of sizes, chemical stabilities, and membrane properties that allow us to determine techniques that produce the desired effect in virus removal, purification, and detection systems.

As recently stated in PNAS (Rappuoli et al. 2014):
"Vaccination is the most effective medical intervention ever introduced and, together with clean water and sanitation, it has eliminated a large part of the infectious diseases that once killed millions of people."
